Gerund adalah kata benda yang dibentuk melalui infinitive + ing. Karena gerund sebagai kata benda maka ia menduduki jabatan-jabatan kata benda diantaranya adalah :

1. Sebagai Subyek .
2. Sebagai Obyek
3. Nominal Predicate
4. Setelah Preposition
5. Compound Noun
6. Setelah Possessive Adjective
7. Setelah ungkapan-ungkapan tertentu

1. Gerund sebagai Subyek
Contoh : Singing makes John happy

2. Gerund sebagai Obyek
Contoh : She always avoids going by herself

Gerund sebagai Obyek ini banyak kita temui setelah kata kerja- kata kerja berikut:
Admit, anticipate, appreciate, avoid, consider, defer, deny, like, dislike, miss, stop, enjoy, mind (-&?), give up, suggest, involve, prevent, escape, resist dll.

3. Gerund sebagai Nominal Predicate
Contoh : My hobby is fishing

4. Gerund setelah Preposition (in, at, on, before, after, without, dll)
Contoh : Why does the sun go on shining

5. Gerund sebagai Compound noun
Contoh : Waiting room, swimming pool, writing desk

6. Gerund setelah Possesive Adjective
Contoh : His coming makes her very happy

7. Gerund setelah ungkapan-ungkapan tertentu seperti :
It is no use = tidak ada gunanya
Can’t stand = tidak tahan
Let’ go = mari kita pergi
Look forward to = menanti
It is no good = tidak baik
To be used to = terbiasa
Object to = menolak

Contoh : It is no good hunting the tiger
Disamping itu ada gerund berupa larangan singkat (Short Prohibition)

Contoh : No smoking, No scratching, No spitting, No climbing dll

Gerund adapula yang berbentuk passive dengan pola.

Being + Past Participle

Passive Gerund ini berfungsi sebagai :
1. Subyek
2. Obyek
3. Setelah Preposition

1. Passive Gerund sebagai Subyek
Contoh : Being taught by Mrs. Liliek is very interesting
Being taken to the zoo makes the children feel very glad

2. Passive Gerund sebagai Obyek
Contoh : The child admitted being given some money
They dislike being spoken

3. Passive Gerund setelah kata depan (Preposition)
Contoh : After being criticed, he got very angry
She feels very nervous before being called
