Apa itu narrative text?
Narrative Text merupakan sebuah jenis teks yang menceritakan suatu cerita khayal/ fiktif dengan tujuan menghibur pembaca atau pendengar. Karena narrative text ini cerita khayal maka belum tentu kebenarannya karena mungkin itu hanya imaginasi dari orang-orang yang membuatnya.
Bagaimana dengan generic structure dan ciri-cirinya?
Generic Structure of Narrative Text
# Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced. (berisi pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita (siapa atau apa, kapan dan dimana)
# Complication : Where the problems in the story developed. (Permasalahan muncul / mulai terjadi dan berkembang)
# Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved. Masalah selesai, secara baik “happy ending” ataupun buruk “bad ending”.
# Coda / reorientation (optional) – lesson from the story
Language Feature of Narrative Text
– Past tense (killed, drunk, etc.)
– Adverb of time (Once upon a time, one day, etc.)
– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc.)
– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, etc.)
– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked, etc.)
– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said,”My name is Snow White). The direct speech uses present tense.

Contoh Narrative Text – The Greedy Monkeys
The Greedy Monkeys Story
A family of monkeys lived in a forest in south China. They often came out to play. They liked to drink wine and wear red shoes. A hunter knew they lived in the forest and wanted to catch them. The monkeys were very clever, they always ran away when they saw him coming.
One day, the monkeys were all playing together. Suddenly one of them thought he could smell some wine.
“Ai-yaah! What a lovely smell! Where is it coming from?” he cried.
The monkeys soon found that it was coming from a large jar at the side of the path. There were several pairs of red shoes also next to the jar. The leader of the monkeys said, “We must be careful. I’m sure the hunter is playing a trick on us.”
Another monkey asked, “Why should he place such beautiful shoes by the side of the jar?”
As he spoke, he scratched his foot which began to itch. Yet a third monkey advised them, “We have not so far been caught by the hunter because we have been careful.” The old monkey who was their leader said “You’re right.”
We must be very careful. We don’t want the hunter to catch us.
“stupid old hunter” he cried out loudly. “Do you really think you can catch us?”
All the other monkeys started to shout, “Silly old hunter! Stupid old hunter!” until their throats were quite dry. They all stood in a circle around the wine jar and red shoes. They did not know what to do. No one wanted to leave. Some of them licked their lips. Others scratched their feet.
“Can we taste just a little of the wine?” one of the monkeys asked.
Without saying any more, all the monkeys rushed towards the wine jar and opened it.
“Ai-yaah! What a marvelous smell! We’re really very lucky! What wonderful wine!”
At first the monkeys tasted the wine with their tongues only. Soon they started to swallow large quantities of it.
Some of them put on the red shoes and jumped and danced in them. Others who had drunk too much wine fell to the ground.
Suddenly there was a loud noise from the forest. It was the hunter.
Some of the monkeys tried to run away. But they could not do so because the shoes were tied together.
It was very easy for the hunter to catch them. He tied all of them up.
“we’re really very unlucky.” One of the monkeys said.
Another monkey answered, “We can only blame ourselves. We were too greedy.”

Kisah Monyet Rakus
Sekelompok monyet tinggal di hutan di Cina Selatan. Mereka sering keluar untuk bermain. Mereka suka minum anggur dan memakai sepatu merah. Seorang pemburu tahu bahwa mereka tinggal di hutan dan ingin menangkap mereka. Monyet-monyet itu sangat pintar, mereka selalu lari saat melihatnya datang.
Suatu hari, monyet-monyet itu sedang bermain bersama. Tiba-tiba salah satu dari mereka mengira dia bisa mencium bau anggur.
“Ai-yaah! Bau yang harum sekali! Dari mana asalnya?” teriaknya.
Monyet-monyet itu segera menyadari bahwa bau itu berasal dari sebuah toples besar di sisi jalan setapak. Ada beberapa pasang sepatu merah juga di samping toples itu. Pemimpin monyet itu berkata, “Kita harus berhati-hati. Aku yakin pemburu itu sedang mempermainkan kita.”
Monyet lain bertanya, “Mengapa dia harus meletakkan sepatu yang begitu indah di samping toples itu?”
Saat berbicara, dia menggaruk kakinya yang mulai gatal. Namun monyet ketiga menasihati mereka, “Kita sejauh ini belum tertangkap oleh pemburu karena kita telah berhati-hati.” Monyet tua yang menjadi pemimpin mereka berkata, “Kalian benar.” Kita harus sangat berhati-hati. Kita tidak ingin pemburu menangkap kita.
“Pemburu tua bodoh” teriaknya keras. “Apakah kau benar-benar berpikir kau dapat menangkap kita?”
Semua monyet lainnya mulai berteriak, “Pemburu tua bodoh! Pemburu tua bodoh!” sampai tenggorokan mereka benar-benar kering. Mereka semua berdiri melingkar di sekitar toples anggur dan sepatu merah. Mereka tidak tahu harus berbuat apa. Tidak ada yang ingin pergi. Beberapa dari mereka menjilati bibir mereka. Yang lain menggaruk kaki mereka.
“Bisakah kita mencicipi sedikit anggur?” salah satu monyet bertanya.
Tanpa berkata apa-apa lagi, semua monyet bergegas menuju toples anggur dan membukanya.
“Ai-yaah! Bau yang luar biasa! Kita benar-benar sangat beruntung! Anggur yang luar biasa!”
Pada awalnya monyet-monyet itu mencicipi anggur hanya dengan lidah mereka. Segera mereka mulai menelannya dalam jumlah banyak.
Beberapa dari mereka mengenakan sepatu merah dan melompat dan menari di dalamnya. Yang lain yang telah minum terlalu banyak anggur jatuh ke tanah.
Tiba-tiba terdengar suara keras dari hutan. Itu adalah si pemburu.
Beberapa monyet mencoba melarikan diri. Namun mereka tidak dapat melakukannya karena sepatu mereka diikat menjadi satu.
Sangat mudah bagi si pemburu untuk menangkap mereka. Dia mengikat mereka semua.
“Kita benar-benar sangat tidak beruntung.” Salah satu monyet berkata.
Monyet lainnya menjawab, “Kita hanya bisa menyalahkan diri kita sendiri. Kita terlalu serakah.”
