Brasilia, Britishcourse.com- Brazil will receive materials from China to produce up to 25 million doses of the Astrazeneca and Sinovac Covid-19 vaccines on Saturday and early next week. On Monday (17/5/2021), the Ministry of Health and political officials announced the plan.

Rodrigo Cruz, executive secretary at the Ministry of Health, said the Fiocruz biomedical center will receive two lots of ingredients for 18 million Astrazeneca injections by Saturday.

Sao Paulo’s governor Joao Doria said the Butantan state biomedical institute would receive materials for 7 million injections by May 26.

“The good news is today I received confirmation that these two lots will be delivered on May 21. That’s enough to produce about 18 million doses,” Cruz told a congressional committee hearing on the Covid-19 crisis.

Cruz said the two lots will initially be shipped separately on May 21 and 28, arriving the following day.

“Good news! The arrival of a new batch with an input of 4 thousand liters, capable of producing 7 million vaccine shots, is scheduled for May 26,” tweeted Doria.

Both Fiocruz and Butantan rely on ingredients from China to produce the two most commonly used Covid-19 vaccines in Brazil.

Butantan last week halted production due to a lack of supply from China’s Sinovac Biotech. Meanwhile Fiocruz said production of doses of Astrazeneca will stop this week until new supplies arrive.

To date, only 17% of Brazilians have received at least one dose of the vaccine and only 8% have been fully vaccinated. According to a Reuters analysis, Brazil is ranked 30th in the world based on the first dose given.
